Discipleship is a Journey

When Jesus commissioned His church to “Go, and make disciples” I don’t imagine He intended a Crusade where thousands are apparently converted to Christianity. Nor do I believe He was suggesting a 13 week, certificate course that declares one a disciple upon completion. While over the years I have found value in both of those things, I think our Savior had something much more intimate and enduring.

A disciple is called to walk with Christ, equipped to live like Christ, and sent to work for Christ.  The call to walk with Christ (salvation) happens in an instant.  But the transformation that follows happens over a lifetime. …and real transformation happens in life on life, intentional relationships. Discipleship is a journey.

Let me introduce you to Art Garza.  I met Art in a church where I was serving as pastor. He came to see what his son was so excited about and gave his life to Christ. That started a journey of transformation that grew out of a deep friendship between the two of us.  We explored the Scriptures together, prayed together, laughed, loved, cried, and buried loved ones together. After more than a decade, we are still in a discipleship relationship. The lines between who is discipling whom have shifted more than once over the last 15 years, or so.  But we are both closer to Christ because of one another.

This is discipleship. And Discipleship Changes Everything!
